“Twinning” is when a Member Organization (MO) of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) forges a partnership with another MO to share friendship, skills, support and to learn about each other’s country and culture and how Girl Guiding/Girl Scouting is delivered in each country.
“Twinning” in Girl Guides of Canada-Guides du Canada (GGC) began in 1984 when it was decided that each province would be linked to a less developed country to assist with a community development. Some of the objectives of this project were:
-To become involved in “grassroots” community development projects in less developed countries with a view to assisting in meeting the needs of women and young people in these countries.
-To gain awareness and understanding in the lifestyle, traditions, customs, culture, etc. of the “twin” country with a view to promoting mutual respect between Canada and the “twinning country”.
In more recent years, twinning projects have been focused MO to MO, supported in Canada by all provinces and territories.
The GGC current twinning project is with the Commonwealth of Dominica.
