INTERNATIONAL SERVICE PROJECT IDEAS

1. National Service Project: Hunger and Poverty: a nation-wide service project where girls and Units across the country will learn about hunger and poverty and how to take action against it. (This would be a great project for Thinking Day 2010!)

2. Raise money for the CWFF

3. AIDS Ribbon Cookies – The international Committee helps the Grandmothers for Grandmothers Campaign who raise money for the ‘Steven Lewis Foundation’. The monies they raise go to projects helping grandmothers in Africa who are raising AIDS orphans. (Stephan Lewis received an Award from WAGGGS in 2007 for the work he has done to help woman & children. www.stephenlewisfoundation.org.)

In March 2009 a few units and the volunteers on the International committee made sugar cookies in the shape of AIDS Ribbons, complete with red icing and donated them, and the Grandmothers sold these at their annual Fabric Sale and made $150 from the cookies. They were very grateful!

Another opportunity to make and donate these AIDS Ribbon cookies will be in the fall when the Grandmothers for Grandmothers Campaign has a bake sale table at the Marda Loop Justice film festival. More Details to come in the fall.

4. Making cards for AIDS Calgary’s Holiday Hampers that are given to their clients. (This can be an activity used for earning the WAGGGS AIDS Badge curriculum).

5. Operation Shoe box (at Christmas time) Samaritans purse sends the gift boxes all over the world to children in need.

6. The world partnership walk is run by the Aga Khan Foundation to help end world poverty. Every May across the county they have a charity walk. In Calgary the walk committee have created a crest for Guides & Scouts to earn by helping the walk with their recycling program. Volunteer with your unit at the walk and help raise awareness of a global issue while being environmental and earn the crest.

7. Send Guide cookies to the soldiers in Afghanistan

8. Knitting Izzy dolls for children in Afghanistan – http://www.vac-acc.gc.ca/youth/sub.cfm?source=activities/kidszone/colour/izzy

GLOBAL YOUTH SERVICE DAY

While doing your program work and earning service badges and duke of Edinburgh’s Award hours why not participate in Global Youth service day?

Global Youth Service Day (GYSD) is the largest annual celebration of young volunteers, where millions of young people in countries everywhere carry out thousands of community improvement projects. All organizations are encouraged to plan youth-led community service projects that involve the broader community in GYSD or showcase existing projects to the media and surrounding community. It is held in April each year, during Canada’s National volunteer week.

Almost any service project counts. Last year Girl Guides organized environmental litter-walks and park clean ups, volunteered at seniors homes or with younger children, raised awareness and support for AIDS, cancer and other disease-fighting groups, helped out at soup kitchens or homeless shelters and much, much more. tell national about it and get your crests. If you are unable to plan something for those dates, you can still earn your crest by planning a community service activity between now and June 30, 2009.

For information about events in a country that is not the United States, please explore the website. www.gysd.net, or visit the Guides Canada Member zone Website about the 2009 challenge.

Discuss, plan, implement and evaluate your service project!

GYSD offers a way for local, national, and international organizations to:

-BUILD the capacity of an international network of organizations that promotes youth participation, service, and learning;

-EDUCATE the public, the media, and policy-makers about the year-round contributions of young people as community leaders around the world;

-MOBILIZE youth and adults to meet the needs of their communities through volunteering; and

-LEARN and share effective practices in youth service, youth voice, and civic engagement in the world today.

There is a GYSD crest available in the Guide centre shop
